(Bangkok) Day 1: Galleria 10 Hotel Bangkok, Sukhumvit Plaza, Terminal 21

It has been a while now since I last blogged; I just wasn’t feeling it. But well, here I am now, sipping on my cup of coffee and putting my memories down before it all starts to fade.

Just a couple of weeks back in mid-June, boyfriend and I made a pretty last minute decision to head to Bangkok because of several reasons:-

  1. Due to some adjustment at work, we can’t go to Japan as we planned for in October/November after the wedding in Taiwan
  2. Any other months between July - September was impossible
  3. Time limit, aka not enough leaves left

So, just 2 - 3 weeks before the trip, we booked our flights and accommodation, which, hence, were quite expensive. I was told that for what we paid for our flight tickets (approx. S$594) on Scoots, we could have taken Thai Airways, and for what we paid for our accommodation, we could have stayed in a better hotel. Oh well, that is what we get for deciding/planning so last minute and having it right smack in the middle of the June Holidays.

Hello, Bangkok!

We arrived at Suvarnabhumi International Airport in the evening and took a cab down to our hotel. Technically, this is my 1st time in Bangkok if you don't count my Secondary 3 Enrichment School trip as one, and Boy! They weren’t joking about the traffic in Bangkok. The moment our cab reached near Nana Station, we came to a stop. The traffic was super slow moving as it was super jam-packed and full of vehicles.

Because of the jam, we only managed to reach and check-in to our hotel, Galleria 10 Hotel Bangkok by Compass Hospitality, at about 7pm. Chose this hotel because it was fairly new and was within our budget, but I did not expect it to be situated inside an alley. It’s quite dark and scary at night to walk alone through the alley and back to the hotel, but lucky for me, I never had to walk back alone as boyfriend was with me. So it is not that bad for me.

After checking in and settling down, we were super hungry, so we head out to hunt for dinner. The initial plan was to head over to Rod Fai Train Night Market, but it was too far away and the traffic jam was horrendous and we concluded that we might probably faint from hunger before we get there, so we decided to just linger around and explore the area.

First meal in Thailand? KOREAN BBQ. Yes, I know but no regrets as it was so delish! This is because Sukhumvit Plaza (aka Korean Town) was only 4 minutes walk from our hotel. There were many Korean cuisine choices at Sukhumvit Plaza, with price ranging from $ - $$$. The one we went to was Kwang Han Roo, which cost us only 300 THB per person for the Pork BBQ Buffet.

After dinner, we head over to Terminal 21, which was just across the road, to do some “grocery” shopping, which was simply buying a lot of titbits and snacks. Since it was really late by the time we reach Terminal 21, many shops were closed / about to close. So, after we did our shopping at the basement levels, we head up to see what’s there since it was a huge shopping mall, and that's where we found the best shop ever in the entire mall... A shop that sells solely and only ONE PIECE MERCHANDISE! Imagine my joy! Made a mental note to head back to the shop on the last day and splurge away.

It was a short day for the first day but for some reason, it felt like a long one as we were drained out. So we head back to our hotel to rest for the day after stopping by 7-11 to get more snacks and some drinks. It's on the way back anyway, so why not?
